AI Overview

AI Overview is a feature where Google’s generative AI creates summaries in response to certain search queries. These summaries are pulled together from various online sources and usually include links to those sources. They sometimes show up at the top of a Google search result (but not always).

At first glance, this might seem helpful — but (you knew it was coming) AI Overview can come with problems. In fact, Google includes a warning: “Important: AI responses may include mistakes.”

Some key issues with AI Overview include:

  • Content theft – Did the original writers give consent for their work to be used?

  • Inaccurate advice or facts

  • Lack of fact-checking

The AI assumes there must be answers, so when it can't fine one it might make one up.

It’s crucial to understand: AI Overview is NOT a source.
You should never use information from AI Overview in a project or paper — it might be incorrect or misleading. Instead, use your research skills to find high-quality, reliable sources.
